① The two digits at the beginning of 5140 alloy pipe number represent the carbon content of steel, which is expressed as a few thousandths of the average carbon content, such as 5140.


② The main alloying elements in 5140 alloy pipe are generally expressed as a few percent, except for individual microalloyed elements. When the average alloy content is less than 1.5%, generally only the element symbol is marked in the steel grade, but the content is not marked. However, if it is easy to be confused under special circumstances, the number "1" can also be marked after the element symbol, such as steel grades "12CrMoV" and "12Cr1MoV". The chromium content of the former is 0.4-0.6%, and that of the latter is 0.9-1.2%, and the other components are all the same. When the average content of alloy elements is ≥ 1.5%, ≥ 2.5%, ≥ 3.5%... The content shall be indicated after the element symbol, which can be expressed as 2, 3, 4... Etc.


③ Vanadium V, titanium Ti, aluminum Al, boron B, rare earth RE and other alloy elements in 5140 alloy pipe belong to microalloyed elements. Although the content is very low, they should still be marked in the steel grade.

④ For alloy structural steel for special purpose, the steel grade is preceded by (or suffix) to represent the symbol of the purpose of the steel.

4140 alloy pipe and seamless pipe have both relations and differences, and can not be confused.


Alloy pipe is defined as Steel Pipe according to the production material (i.e. material). As the name suggests, it is a pipe made of alloy; Seamless pipe is defined according to the production process of steel pipe (seamless seam). What is different from seamless pipe is seamless pipe, including straight seam welded pipe and spiral pipe.


After quenching and tempering treatment, 4140 alloy pipe can obtain good comprehensive mechanical properties, low-temperature impact and good hardenability. Oil quenching can improve fatigue strength. During water quenching, complex shape parts are easy to crack, with medium cold bending plasticity, good cutting performance and poor weldability after heat treatment. It is generally used in the quenched and tempered state, but also carbonitriding and high-frequency quenching. It is one of the more widely used alloy structural steels.


After quenching and tempering, 4140 alloy pipe can be used to manufacture medium speed and medium load parts, such as machine tool gears, shafts, worms, spline shafts, thimble sleeves, etc; Quenching and tempering and surface high-frequency quenching are used to manufacture parts with high surface hardness and high wear resistance, such as gear, shaft, main shaft, crankshaft, spindle sleeve, pin, connecting rod, inlet valve, screw and other quenching and medium temperature tempering. 


They are used to manufacture parts with heavy load and medium speed impact, such as oil pump rotor, sliding block, gear, main shaft sleeve, etc; Quenching and low-temperature tempering are used to manufacture heavy-duty, low impact and wear-resistant parts, such as worm, shaft, sleeve, etc; Carbon nitrogen treatment is used to manufacture transmission parts with large size and high low-temperature toughness, such as shafts, gears, etc
